Join us on foot to Tyresta National Park!

Hike for a whole day in Stockholm's closest wilderness and learn more about this unique natural environment and its fascinating history. From Nyfors, one of the Stockholm region's most lively waterfalls, we walk through well-preserved forest areas to Tyresta National Park. Perhaps we'll hear the call of the black throated diver while we enjoy a fine picnic lunch with view over Lake Årsjön's smooth cliffs.

Our naturalist guides have expertise in finding and interpreting Scandinavia's flora and fauna and have special experience in the Tyresta region. There are many fascinating things to show and discuss! Tyresta is not just Sweden's largest and oldest undisturbed forest but is also of enormous cultural interest. Stone Age peoples sat here around their fires looking out over what for 10,000 years ago was an archipelago that had just emerged from the sea.

This is a whole day tour (lunch included) and the approximate program of our itinerary is as follows:

Getting there

Meet up with our expert hike guide at Gullmarsplan station at 8:30 (meeting point is upstairs in the station, at the bus stop for bus 873). Take bus 873 upstairs from Gullmarsplan underground station in Stockholm at 8:35 for a 25 minutes ride to Nyfors. Please note! The bus ride is not included, you'll need to get a pre-paid ticket for the local transport. Same goes for the ride back to Gullmarsplan after the tour. 

We walk at a comfortable pace stopping at interesting places along the way. Our ramble to Tyresta takes about 6 hours. You have the opportunity to take a look at the National Park Visitor’s Centre before taking the bus back to Stockholm, which arrives at Gullmarsplan at about 16:30.

About our journey

Our hike is a journey in time. We start at the water fall in Nyfors where there were already mills and gun powder factories in the 15th century. The village of Tyresta is well preserved with its oldest house dating from the 18th century. Out in the National Park we can find traces from early stone age peoples as well as from the laborious attempts that have been made to chop this forest down. During the hike you’ll be able to acquaint yourself with the remarkable story of how this forest was saved and to learn about what life may have been like for the early stone age people as well as a great deal more interesting information about the area.

We continue hiking along the Sörmland Trail past magnificent viewpoints, old meadows and thick forests. At Lake Årsjön in the heart of Tyresta we serve lunch and maybe take a refreshing dip in the clear, inviting water.

Recommended packing

Small rucksack, water bottle, rain clothes, swimming gear and a warm jumper (depending on weather and season). Sturdy shoes are usually good enough for this hike unless it has rained a lot, when waterproof hiking boots are recommended. Even a good pair of sneakers will do if you are used to hiking in nature.

We normally use one of the following rambling guides:

• Jonas Hedlund
Jonas grew up here and now resides on the edge of Tyresta. He is a biogeographer, a teacher at the Tyresö Nature School and has worked in the nationalpark for several years.

• Mattias Pettersson
Mattias is an archaeologist and artist who grew up near to Tyresta and is a specialist in Stone Age remains from this area. He is also a naturalist who has worked in the national park for several years.
