Explore the city the best way

One of the best ways to explore this charming city is on foot and by boat. We will walk with an expert guide through the winding streets of Gamla Stan (The Old Town) with its intriguing buildings and fascinating history. From here we take a ferry trip through the beautiful harbour of Stockholm, passing the Royal National City Park of Djurgarden. We walk together to the impressive, purpose-built museum of Vasa, the world’s only surviving 17th-century ship and one of the foremost tourist sights in the world.

Stockholm archipelago - Unique, beautiful and wild

The Stockholm archipelago has literally thousands of islands in every conceivable shape and size. They actually start right in the middle of the city, with the islands near Stockholm being virtually suburbs of the Swedish capital. Other parts are uninhabited and are still among the wildest areas in Europe. None of the islands are quite like the other: Some are forest-clad, some rise high above the sea - others are low, bare slabs of rock called “skerries”. On some of the islands it takes several hours to walk from one end to the other whereas it is possible to swim around others in a couple of minutes. This fantastic seascape, situated just outside an historic capital, might seem like it is a paradise for tourists. There are, however, few tourists to be seen in the archipelago even at the peak season in July. Here we will do full day trip by a comfortable ferry boat and by foot. We will also use row boats to be able to cross between the islands.

Hiking in the Ancient forest of Tyresta National Park

Tyresta National Park is the largest in southern Sweden as well as the closest ancient forest to any European capital city. The area is also of great cultural interest, with remains from Stone Age peoples who sat here around their fires looking out over what 10,000 years ago was a newly-emerged archipelago. In parts of Tyresta the forest is a rugged “troll” forest full of giant trees and contorted, moss covered decomposing trees on the forest floor. There are desolate small moors, dramatic cliffs and clear forest lakes. Twisted old pines and lichen cover slabs where the capercaillie calls and courts. We will hike with a nature guide from the border of the park to the national park centre with its small museum featuring all the national parks of Sweden. There are possibilities to take a swim in one of the lakes before our lunch at the lake shore.
